Check out what Michael had to say in this week’s feature…
Nikki: Do you remember the first time you started dancing?
Michael: Yes, I was 14 when I started to take dance more seriously but I’ve been grooving & catching vibes since I was 3!
Nikki: Do you remember the first song you choreographed to? (Or your earliest memory)
Michael: Goapele – Closer
Nikki: Your personal advice for dancers when it comes to free styling?
Michael: Dance IN the music & really listen to it, if you do the music will show you what to do and where to do it. Part of a great dancer is the ability to lose yourself in the moment and remember a feeling.
Nikki: Getting in the zone to choreograph, what does it take for you?
Michael: I go to Narnia if I have to push my brain to choreograph. I also don’t watch other dancers videos if they already did it to the song. I need to be true to myself and let the natural come out.
Nikki: Who are some of your biggest influences in the Dance industry?
Michael: Michael Jackson, Luther Brown, Lyle Benita, Movement lifestyle, Bag of Trix etc.
Nikki: Name a Toronto Choreographer you enjoy working with and why?
Michael: I haven’t worked with too many but I’d have to say Shavar Blackwood because He is someone that I think values his dancers even outside of just dance. Plus I respect him as an artist, understand his vibe & feel the same music.
Nikki: Name one of your favorite artists to work with and why? (It does not have to be a pop star any type of artist that a Dancer would work with i.e.; another Dancer, Choreographer, Musician etc.)
Michael: Shavar Blackwood, because He personally understands me as a dancer and knows what I need and what my strengths are.
Nikki: Are you currently working on any projects?
Michael: I am currently building a video series of songs that I always wanted to dance too. They are my visual interpretations of how the song makes me feel and what I think its saying. Some choreographed and some freestyle.
Nikki: Qualities you believe Toronto Dancers possess?
Michael: TDOT dancers catch VIBEZ, they feel the music and bring a whole new flavour to the table.
Nikki: Any advice for emerging dancers and choreographers working/training in Toronto?
Michael: Love it, live it, learn it & never stop doing you. It’s a God given talent to be able to lift up others and spread good vibes!
THANK YOU MIKE FOR SHARING YOUR LOVE & PASSION WITH T.D.O.T. XO
